Chicago is expecting record cold tomorrow. We’re going to have two days hovering between -13 and -25, with a wind chill as low as -55. Now, I know some of you rural Canadians just call that Wednesday. W hile I like to think us Chicagoans are a hardy bunch, we’re not really equipped for these conditions .
A lot of people I know are already having trouble keeping their house up to temperature. My house, while being nearly 100 years old, is better equipped than most. Our first floor has zero insulation, but I had our second floor and attic spray foamed when I gutted and remodeled up there six years ago. I also have modern high efficiency windows and back door. Not crazy high efficiency windows, like the kind that melt Huzer’s SUVs, but decent ones.
Now that beautiful extra wide front door ... That’s another story. That baby leaks air like a sieve. It’s typically not really a problem, because it opens into an enclosed porch, but on a day like tomorrow it will be a problem. So, I went high tech. Masking tape and a used visqueen drop cloth to the rescue.
We don’t plan on opening either door at all tomorrow. We even had our mail held. The bills and junk mail can wait until Saturday. Of course I replaced the furnace filter too.

Here's how crazy the weather can be around here. It's going to be in the low 40's and rainy this weekend.

That looks like a glorious old door, albeit it probably looks better in more mild weather.

We're totally getting off easy here in southern Alberta. Currently -5 C. Environment Canada is calling for +6 C tomorrow during the day.

Did they cancel school for tomorrow? All of the schools in Indy closed already.

Yes, and yes. It can be fixed up to perform much better, but that hasn't happened yet.

You're very close! This house is a 1925 Sears Osbourne. It's undergone many changes over the years, but it's still recognizable as such.

Yep, tomorrow and Thursday. Lots of businesses are closing too. Chicago is pretty much shutting down tomorrow.

Except my job... even though when schools are closed we literally have nothing to do.
Thankfully I only live 5 min from work and my daily smart has the new (but shady quality) battery in it. If I can’t make it to work tomorrow I think I can finally be called Oppo’s David Tracy.

That’s about how Indy is, at least for tomorrow . Mrs. blacktruck’s birthday is tomorrow, we planned on going to the mall, of course it’s still open. However we might freeze to death walking through the parking lot.

I bet you'll get a good parking spot! I'm not ever planning on opening the back door tomorrow.

Woah woah, all but two of my vehicles run! And none are consumed by rust or have any parts in a dishwasher.
But if I can't get anything started tomorrow it'll mean I have ten vehicles and none could get me to work. That'll be rock bottom. lol

Gotta love this Chicago weather! My college campus is closed for today and most likely tomorrow. I was surprised to find out that the mall I work at, decided to close too. (Well, the actual mall is open, but all stores inside are closed)

Miss Mercedes, is that an aspiration or a fear? At least you bought one new car, so I’d say that you are no David Trac y.

Honestly, any general retail store that decides to open today, is stupid. Nobody is going out for general shopping. Hardware stores and grocery stores, sure. Ain't nobody going out to buy a new shirt or something!

We’re not too far behind you. How's the weather inside your house? I haven't ventured downstairs, but my second floor is still nice and cozy, thanks to the wonders of spray foam.

Hey, La Crosse! I lived there for three years while I went to UW-La Crosse. My sister still lives in the area too.

My ultra high efficiency furnace has a tendency to crap out on only the coldest days. Condensation from the exhaust causes the combustion air intake to develop a spirally vortex of frost at the inlet. Needs to be -35 with no wind for this to happen.

That would be a huge problem for me, because I have a very high efficiency furnace for my second floor, and its inlet is on the roof!

Yep, the house I grew up in had a vety similar door. It’s from that in between era after victorian but before the depression. After WW2, that style vanished. If you want a fun read, check out https://www.amazon.com/Homes-Interiors-1920s-Cassandra-Eason/dp/0921335067
Its a builders catalog from the 20's with drawings and moldings/trim and ca binets for every room of the house. Its a fun read and really helpful in doing projects to see how it was done in the day.

I’m in Milwaukee now so I definitely feel your pain! -50 with windchill right now.

You know,,,, The air doesn’t leak through the door because it wants too, it leaks to replace the air being lost somewhere else. Likely suspects incluse air loss through loose windows, chimney, hot water heater flue etc.

I have a mid efficiency furnace from the late 80’s in my ‘68 Calgary house. I will never upgrade it to a high efficiency. My sister has one and they have same problem with condensation. One of my friends as well. Good ol’ d ependable Carrier furnace with lots of compatible parts for me. I will personally change every individual component if need be. I’ve changed the ceramic igniter, the draft inducer motor twice and that’s it over 7 years with some brutal winter weeks in there. In total, 1.2 days of no furnace operation; only because I needed parts from a warehouse on the Sunday of a long weekend and required a bonded employee with a key to get it for me.

my 1908 Regina house had a “gravity furnace” or “octopus” No moving parts or electronics. Think “home alone” furnace. But mine didn’t look like castle grayskull. It was brilliant.

Inlet will generally clear itself when it stops pulling in frigid air. Engineering snorkels for the exhaust can make interesting condensation back flow problems.
